Mario Power Up Energy Drink Review

Welcome to my first review!  I'll kick things off with none other than the Mario Power Up Energy Drink, just in time to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Mario series! Let's get started then.

The 8.4 oz can features our favorite Italian plumber against a blue backdrop, holding a mushroom. The white border around Mario gives the image a sticker-like appearance. Excellent artwork and almost too nice open. Almost. The bold lettering of the logo also stands out very sharply. Below that is the statement: "Product is not intended for children." Those mushrooms must be pretty potent.

The smell of the drink is somewhat acidic, like orange juice, mixed with a synthetic blueberry scent. It actually isn't as bad as I make it sound, though. As I poured the drink, I was surprised at the light purple, nearly pink hue-it almost had the appearance of water as it made its way to the bottom of the glass.

The drink is lightly carbonated.

The taste is fairly mellow in the mouth and is more noticeable as it's being swallowed; I was expecting a much stronger blueberry taste, but there is actually not much to it apart from a slight citric flavor, which fortunately, is not bitter or overpowering. The aftertaste is mild as well, and cannot really be tasted after a short while.

The drink was consumed roughly around 4:00 P.M., when I was feeling slightly groggy (despite not doing much), and while I did not really feel a sugar rush from it, it did make me feel slightly more alert. Maybe I'm just too lazy. There is a warning on the can not to consume more than three cans per day.

Overall, the drink differed from my expectations in both appearance and flavor, but I was not disappointed with the purchase ($3.17). I hereby give this drink: 3.5/5. I would consider buying it again sometime.

Mario: "You drank the whole thing and only gave it a 3.5 out of 5?!? Why I oughta..."
